For chocolate fans, winter would not be winter without hot chocolate. Lots of standard hot chocolate powders either are full of nasties, or aren’t dairy free for those looking for a plant based option. Luckily, you can make your own with ingredients that are nurturing to the body, and can be a sweet treat without the nasties.
Raw cacao powder is cocoa powder in its raw, unrefined form, meaning it still carries all the nutritious benefits. It is full of antioxidants (around 40 times more than blueberries), magnesium, calcium and acts as a natural mood elevator.
Try topping this with whipped coconut cream, vegan marshmallows and dairy free chocolate chips for the ultimate hot chocolate feast.
Ingredients
1 cup of a milk of your choice
1/2 tsp coconut oil (optional)
2 tsp raw cacao powder
1/4 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp - 1 tsp of agave, rice or maple syrup (to taste)
a pinch of salt
Heat the milk in a pan with the coconut oil (if using) to allow the coconut oil to meltOnce the milk is hot, but not boiling so that the heat doesn’t kill the benefits of the raw cacao, add the vanilla, cacao powder, sweetener and salt. Whisk the ingredients together (soy milk makes the frothiest drinks for non-dairy milk) and pour into you mug – enjoy!
