As we head into winter, we thought we’d share three warming drinks over the next three weeks to make the cold more bearable. The first we’re sharing is a turmeric latte recipe, which is spiced with cinnamon to turn turmeric, something often used in savoury recipes, into a sweet and warming hug in a mug.
Cinnamon is full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatories, and helps to fight infections and viruses, making it an all-round beneficial ingredient. Turmeric is renowned for it’s powerful medicinal properties, as well as also being anti-inflammatory, making the combination of ingredients in the latte the perfect winter health booster.
Unlike coffee, this turmeric latte is a slow releaser, and won’t overload the system with too much adrenaline, but will still raise energy levels. The sunny colour is a welcome sight in the darkness, and this drink is definitely a hug in a mug!
Alternative option to making your own
If you don’t feel like making your own, or are travelling somewhere and don’t want to be taking jars of spices with you, then we stock an already made turmeric latte mix in our stores.
Variations
We have seen lots of different recipes of turmeric lattes, with some people adding pepper, ginger, coconut oil and other spices, but we like ours simple. You can use this as a starting point for your recipe, then experiment with adding other ingredients, or else enjoy this recipe as it is – the flavour combinations and amounts are endless and completely up to you!
The Recipe
1 cup of a milk of your choice (we like the Rude Health almond milk best)
1 tsp ground turmeric
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp - 1 tsp of agave, rice or maple syrup (to taste)
Start by heating the milk in a pan, being careful not to let the milk boil to avoid denaturing the benefits of the turmeric.
In you mug stir together the turmeric, cinnamon and sweetener into a runny past.
You can whisk the milk to make it frothy, or, once the milk is hot (but not boiling) slowly pour it into the mug and stir to mix everything together. You might find that the drink separates a bit, with the spices floating to the top, if that is the case then just stir and enjoy!
